Miss Knives is a character in Chapter 1, serving as the game's boss.
Paper Lily[]
Early life[]
Human past[]
By handing each uncovered special item to the painting with two protruding hands, expecting something located in the locked room in the library in the correct order, it's possible to uncover Miss Knives' backstory.
The First Blessing - The Mirror[]
By placing the mirror on the painting, it is possible to see that Miss Knives was born blind. Her parents initially considered abandoning her due to the belief that a blind girl would not be able to contribute to the family. Despite this, her mother expressed that they loved her so much that they decided to give her a chance at life. Miss Knives describes her life as below average, managing her chores, going to the market, and assisting with her parents' vegetable garden. This turned out to be beneficial when her mother fell ill, becoming bedridden and expected to remain in that condition for the rest of her life.
We learned that Miss Knives was able to make a friend named Iris, whom she would meet at the riverbank every day. Miss Knives describes Iris as a cheerful girl who always talked excitedly about everything in their village, making the world seem brighter. They were very close and even made a plan to run away together once they turned 14 years old, despite Miss Knives being content with her simple life as long as she had Iris by her side. Miss Knives expressed her wish to just be able to see Iris.
This is when it is implied that she receives the first blessing, which grants her the ability to see. One day, she wakes up and is able to see her surroundings: shapes, colors, her parents, the broken dining table, the weeds in the garden, the chipped cup she would drink from, and her wrinkled, probably poor-quality clothing. However, despite being in this situation, she was happy to see it, calling them "the most beautiful things I had ever seen". But, despite feeling so positive about her surroundings, she did not feel the same about her own appearance.
Due to the sudden "blessing," Miss Knives' parents started to become distant from her. Even the people from her village became suspicious, staring at her and whispering behind her back. Based on the dialogue, it seemed like everyone was scared of her after the unexpected blessing that restored her vision. Even Iris appeared nervous around Miss Knives but was still happy that she had regained her eyesight, referring to it as a miracle.
As time passed, Miss Knives' parents began avoiding her more, brushing her away whenever she tried to speak to them, and seemingly hating her, as Miss Knives describes the hatred in their eyes when they looked at her.
The Second Blessing - The Sketchbook[]
Miss Knives talks about the second blessing and what came before it. On the riverbank previously mentioned, Iris would discuss things Miss Knives couldn't see, but now that she could, it was quite different, although she still appreciated Iris and her company.
To celebrate the "miracle," Iris steals a sketchbook and watercolors from her family to give as a gift to Miss Knives, which she was told were very expensive. Iris explained that the gift was given because Miss Knives had always wanted to paint and achieve her dreams.
After receiving the gift, Miss Knives began a habit of showing her bed-bound mother the paintings she had done. The paintings initially consisted of simple things like trees and objects, but she also enjoyed painting portraits of people, whom she found beautiful and unique. Despite mostly creating innocent and ordinary paintings, something unexpected started to appear on the paper; twisted and frightening creatures painted in black. Miss Knives does not remember painting them. Every morning, more of these creepy paintings would appear, yet Miss Knives still could not recall painting them.
The Third Blessing - The Cold Compress[]
Before the third blessing occurred, Miss Knives' mother's illness worsened, and her father began preparing for her eventual death. Miss Knives, however, was fearful of this possibility and did not want her mother to die. To help lower her mother's fever, Miss Knives offered her a cold compress, as her mother always believed water was the best form of healing. That night, she prayed for her mother's recovery and wished for her to get better.
When the third blessing came, it came as a surprise to everyone in the village, including Miss Knives. Her mother miraculously improved and was back to her normal self, out of bed and even cooking. She claimed to feel better than she had in years and was even able to go to the market by herself.
However, after two days of this blessing, the villagers came to her door and accused Miss Knives' mother of witchcraft, claiming she had used her powers to be cured of a deadly illness. They took her away and burned her at the stake in an effort to "cleanse" the village.
The Fourth Blessing - The Foot[]
Miss Knives begins talking about the fourth blessing in a very negative way, saying she would never wish for it.
The memory starts with Miss Knives being bullied as a child and having her sketchbook and watercolors taken away by boys at her school. One of the boys, Boy 1, opens the notebook and sees twisted creature paintings that appeared in Miss Knives' sketchbook, even though she didn't paint them herself. The boy then accuses her of being a witch and destroys her art supplies, threatening to report her. He then mocks her vision impairment, saying she was only meant to see darkness and calling her a "blind freak". Suddenly, an unnatural force twists the boy's right leg almost 360 degrees, breaking it instantly.
Along with this, Iris informs Miss Knives that she can no longer see her due to her parents' demands, further upsetting Miss Knives.
The Fifth Blessing - The Knife[]
After the fourth blessing incident, the villagers and authorities once again visited Miss Knives' house, accusing her and her father of witchcraft. They claimed she was a witch and said the whole family needed to be "cleansed." In a panic, her father denied her as his daughter, stating he found her on the streets and they were not related by blood. When the authorities didn't believe him, he attempted to flee and was killed by a gun. Miss Knives was then taken to a prison cell, waiting for the trial. The only company she had were rats, which she appreciated in that moment, but she was scheduled for execution the next morning.
And that remained until Iris showed up on the other side of the cell, holding a knife and crying. Iris then confessed that she had told her dad about what happened, thinking that he would protect Miss Knives if she was truly a witch, only to be quickly proven wrong. Iris offered the knife to Miss Knives, implying that she should kill herself before the authorities do, since her father told her that "burning is slow and painful" and Miss Knives would be "better off doing it this way."
The Sixth Blessing - The Fire[]
Miss Knives was tied up in front of the entire village as Iris's father delivered a speech about ushering in a new era of peace and cleansing impurities. Miss Knives questioned her role, wondering if anyone in the crowd cry for her well-being or if she was merely a sacrificial pawn in a larger narrative. As the fire engulfs her, she screamed against the injustice, cursing the bystanders for their cruelty. Suddenly, she received her sixth blessing, causing chaos as flames spread across the village. Miss Knives unties herself with a knife given by Iris, trying to find her but, due to her burnt legs, she was unable to move.
She grapples with her tragic circumstances since regaining her eyesight, ultimately stabbing her own eyes to reclaim her old life and coming to a dark realization of being cursed.
Demon Past[]
After dying and being turned into a demon, it is revealed in the books in the library that Miss Knives was taken to a facility as a subject and tested on by Glen and another unnamed demon. She was considered useless because she consistently failed the tests she was given. The people using her as a subject constantly verbally abused her, calling her pitiful and useless, among other names. As a result, her tests were stopped and she was left alone in her cell. After spending many days alone, she created her own illusion world, which is the cozy house that Lacie and Sai discover when exploring the facility.
Chapter 1[]
Miss Knives' House[]
Miss Knives is first seen in the living room when she sees Lacie and Sai. She is initially puzzled, assuming they are guests, but freaks out upon seeing a fire and rushes to extinguish it. When she approaches Lacie, she mentions a smell and Lilith, which enrages her. She shouts at her to get out and traps them in separate cages before the screen cuts to black.
Later on, Lacie managed to free herself and meets Spider on the first floor. He warns her about Miss Knives and instructs her on how to unseal items scattered around the house to escape. When they hear footsteps, Spider tells Lacie to hide downstairs. Suddenly, a loud breaking sound can be heard and when Lacie checks, Spider is gone and his hiding spot has been destroyed.
Upon unlocking the second floor of the library, Lacie finds Spider hanging on the wall in a small pool room. Spider explains that Miss Knives turned him small because she doesn't want him around. He reveals that everything Lacie sees is an illusion created by her, based on her desires. Spider advises her to break the illusion by collecting objects that are connected to her memories, in order to remind her of who she truly is. And once Lacie has collected these items, Spider instructs her to burn them in the correct order, ensuring she has a way to light the fireplace as well.
After Lacie burns all five blessings in the fireplace, Miss Knives reappears and the battle ensues. Once again consumed by rage, she uses her powers to create a dimension that resembles a painting and attacks Lacie with knives. The battle progresses through four phases, with Lacie having to turn off candles to culminate the fight. After successfully dodging Miss Knives' attacks, an illusion shatters, sending Lacie to a black void where she sees a young Miss Knives crying at a fireplace. A paper titled "SIXTH BLESSING" is on the floor in front of her.
Facility[]
After Lacie and Sai make it back to the facility, they come across Miss Knives stuck in a cage in napkin form. They unlock the cage and see her stuff scattered around. Sai wonders how long she's been stuck there, but Lacie isn't sure. As they're about to leave, Lacie apologizes to Miss Knives for disturbing her.
Lilith[]
Lilith is a character who is occasionally mentioned, as told by Miss Knives to be the one who gave her all of those blessings. She holds hatred towards Lilith, promptly attacking Lacie after being reminded of her by the "smell." It is also implied that Lilith is the same type of creature that cursed Lacie, as Miss Knives mistook Lacie for Lilith due to their similar smell.
